With recent headlines focusing our minds on how messy, unpredictable and costly it is to ask the courts to decide how to divide marital assets, the fact that many people agree themselves and with the help of professional advisers how best to part is often overlooked. But this is undoubtedly the best way to split - by achieving a settlement you have both agreed, saving money and emotional energy in the process.  Visitors who booked into the FREE Financial Surgery at the Starting Over Show in Brighton which was run by Breakup Angels financial experts Bill Smith and Judith Morgan were helped to plan their finances and deal with debt, often in crisis situations.

Coming next - this time in Leicester - is the Leicester Divorce Fair, created by  Clive Langley of PSA (Financial Services) Ltd who says:

“ I know from personal experience just what a painful process a divorce can be. There are many people who are trapped in unhappy relationships who don't know where to turn when they are in crisis. We want to state that we are not encouraging people to separate, however for those who find themselves in that situation, we want to offer what is effectively a “one stop shop” where they can empower themselves with information. Leicester Separation and Divorce Fair - free entry

Time: 7pm-9pm

Where: The Walker's Stadium (the home of Leicester City FC)

The idea behind the fair is to help couples and individuals who are going through the painful process of a marital or relationship breakdown. Speakers at the fair will include local solicitors, financial advisers, relationship counsellors and therapists and there will be many other exhibitors. 

Commenting on the fair, local family lawyer Andrew Ford of Andrew Ford solicitors, another partner in the event said:

“I have felt for some time, as a family law practitioner, that there is a greater need for help, advice and counselling in what is probably the most difficult part of some peoples lives. The idea for the fair is that , rather than encourage people to get divorced, we want people to be able to make an informed decision and to consider all the ramifications before taking the irreversible decision to separate. The fair is aimed at those who are not only divorcing but also those who are living together. If people decide that it is best to separate, then we can offer services that can help both emotionally and financially. In particular, we want to help those with children to resolve difficulties and minimise harm to any young person.”
